We measure satisfaction and engagement together.
Employee satisfaction shows how content employees are with their current working conditions. Employee engagement is the tendency to stay with the organization, go beyond what the job requires and recommend the organization to others. Satisfaction is the foundation of engagement, so we assess the two together, alongside employee motivation.

Download for FreeAn employee satisfaction survey is a structured study that measures employees’ views on topics such as management, pay and benefits, career development, communication and working conditions. The goal is to see the organization’s strengths and areas for improvement through employees’ eyes.
An employee engagement survey measures employees’ tendency to stay with the organization, put in more effort than the job requires and recommend the organization to others. It also examines areas that affect engagement — such as managers, culture, development and recognition — to reveal which factors drive engagement most.
Satisfaction shows how content employees are with their current conditions. Engagement reflects how emotionally connected employees are to the organization and how much effort they are willing to put into its success. A satisfied employee is not always an engaged one, so measuring both gives a more accurate picture.
The number of questions depends on the areas you want to measure and the organization’s goals. A comprehensive annual survey usually has 40-50 questions and aims to be completed in 15-20 minutes. Surveys that are too long reduce both participation and response quality.
Yes. Anonymity is essential for employees to answer openly and honestly. In Digital Institute surveys, participation is tracked through personal links, but responses are reported anonymously and results are not shown for groups smaller than 10 people.
Running a comprehensive survey once a year is common practice. This gives enough time to act on the results and see their impact. In between, short pulse surveys focused on specific topics can also be run.
Engagement is assessed with questions that measure behavioral tendencies such as the intention to stay, the willingness to go the extra mile and the likelihood of recommending the organization. The responses are converted into an engagement score and analyzed together with the other categories that influence engagement.
The survey can be run in-house, but having an independent firm conduct it increases employees’ trust in anonymity and boosts participation. It also brings expertise and an impartial perspective to question design, analysis and the interpretation of results.
When choosing a provider, look at the research methodology, how well the question set can be tailored to your organization, anonymity and data security practices, the ability to reach blue-collar employees, reporting and dashboard capabilities, and support for post-survey action planning. It is also important to weigh the difference between a software-only solution and a firm that offers analysis and consulting support.
The cost depends on the number of employees, the scope of the question set, the number of languages, delivery channels such as SMS, the number of report breakdowns and whether action planning consulting is included. Contact us for a proposal tailored to your organization.
Results are examined company-wide and by department and demographic breakdowns. Beyond category scores, the analysis looks at which areas drive engagement most, which groups show the highest intention to leave and which themes stand out in open-ended comments. This identifies the priority areas for improvement.
Results should be shared first with senior management and then with each manager, based on their own team’s results. The conversation should focus on development rather than blame and should end with concrete actions. Sharing a summary of the results and planned actions with employees also builds trust for the next survey.
The aim is to complete the whole process, from planning to action planning, in 6–8 weeks. The timeline can vary depending on how quickly the question set is finalized and how long the survey stays open.
Employees without a corporate email address receive a personal link by SMS, and the survey is easy to complete on a mobile device. Multi-language support and reminder messages increase participation among field and production employees. Where digital access is limited, the survey can also be supported with paper questionnaires.
